What is an IP address?
An IP address is the number that identifies your connection on the internet. When you load a page, your request carries this address so the server knows where to send the response back. Without it, traffic would have no return path.
The address shown above is your public IP address — the one assigned by your
internet provider and visible to every site you visit. It is different from the private address
your router hands out inside your home or office, which usually starts with
192.168., 10. or 172.16. and is not reachable from the
internet.
IPv4 and IPv6
There are two versions in use. IPv4 addresses look like
203.0.113.42 and there are roughly 4.3 billion of them — far too few for the modern
internet, which is why providers share them using carrier-grade NAT.
IPv6 addresses look like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334 and the
space is large enough that address exhaustion is no longer a concern.
Most connections today are dual-stack: they have both, and software picks whichever the destination supports. You can check each independently with the IPv4 checker and the IPv6 checker.
What your IP address does and does not reveal
An IP address reveals the approximate region your connection is registered in, and the network operator that owns it. That is genuinely useful for diagnosing routing problems, confirming a VPN is active, or configuring a firewall allowlist.
It does not reveal your name, your street address or your identity. Mapping an address to a person requires records held by the internet provider, which are released only through a legal process. Geolocation databases place you near the provider's facility, so a result that names a nearby city rather than your own is normal and expected.

Frequently asked questions
What is a public IP address?
A public IP address is the address your internet provider assigns to your connection. Every website you visit sees it, because it is the return address your traffic needs in order to reach you. It identifies your connection, not you personally, and it usually changes over time.
Why does my IP address keep changing?
Most home connections use dynamic addressing, so your provider assigns a new address periodically or whenever your router reconnects. Business connections often pay for a static address that stays the same. Switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data also changes your address, because you are on a different network.
Does IPGet store my IP address?
No. Your address is read from the connection, used to build the page you are looking at, and then discarded. It is never written to a database and never linked to an identity, because there are no accounts on IPGet.
Does a VPN change what this page shows?
Yes. When a VPN or proxy is active, the address shown here belongs to the VPN server rather than your own connection, and the location shown will be wherever that server sits. That is exactly how you can confirm a VPN is working.
Why is my location slightly wrong?
IP geolocation maps an address block to the area where it is registered, which is often the provider’s regional facility rather than your building. City-level accuracy is typical, street-level accuracy is not possible from an IP address alone.
